The learning goals and literacies this assignment addresses are:
- Students will produce critical analysis, responses, and evaluations of both physical performances and written academic scholarship.
- Students will navigate the growing intersectionality between dance and technology through independent projects and practices.
- Students will design and present formal presentations and/or arguments based on scholarly research.
- Students will produce critical analysis, responses, and evaluations of both physical performances and written academic scholarship.
This assignment was a project throughout the semester of the Dance and Society I class. We had to pick a specific dance that we did not study in class and critically analyze the origins, history and any other aspects as we see fit. My group choose tango, as our brief initial research showed it had very complex origins and immigrations to different countries.
My section of the assignment centers around 3 separate articles – Strings of Passion, Tango Travels to Europe and Tango in the U.S. and Japan. These articles focus on the music of tango, the immigration and reception of tango in Europe and then it’s later travels to the U.S. and Japan. We all helped to format and design the style of the magazine and present it to the class at the end of the semester.
This item I found to be very successful as I believe it contains a lot of careful research displayed in a very consumer-friendly way. The articles themselves are very detailed and involve a lot of critical analysis of scholarly evidence. It is very informative and engaging.
If I had a chance to redo this project, I would change the time-management we used. I felt certain aspects of the magazine composition, not the writing itself, was a bit too last minute to be comfortable with.
The magazine is linked here. The title of the magazine is Dancer’s Digest, with the specific issue title Investigating Tango: The International Journey of Tango Through History.
