The learning goals and literacies this assignment addresses are:

• Read and analyze historical documents within their social contexts and evaluate the role of the individual in ancient cultures.
• Read Greek and Latin prose and poetry within their larger cultural and historical settings.
• Deploy visual materials appropriately in assignments and assessments.
• Identify and isolate primary and secondary sources for assignments and assessments.

This assignment was in conjunction with an experimental course, Romans and Their Environment, that used Minecraft to create a historically accurate Roman town. Each class member was assigned a Roman persona, and I was assigned a Roman farmer. We had to create literary evidence that we would leave in our Minecraft houses. It was a creative writing assignment, with primary source evidence, and I decided to do a family history and a family tree.

I found this item to be mainly successful. I completed the literary evidence, but I had a lot of fun with it, maybe too much fun. The family history is rooted in primary source materials, but is very creative and doesn’t always take a professional tone. The family tree has no historical accuracy or primary source to inform it, which makes it a fun add-on and not as successful.

If I had a chance to redo this project, I would add more historically accurate information to the family history, with more primary and secondary sources. I would also make the family stories less dramatic as it leans into unprofessional at times.
